Coimbra World Heritage Town
This city in Central Portugal was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Town in 2012 and has 29 classified monuments within it's Historical Center. Along with the monuments, spending some time in this town is wonderful as there are many traditions and rituals, connected to its centenary University and the rich Medieval History of this place, that deserve being experienced. Fado of Coimbra, the Old Medieval Walls of the Town, the Students typical Houses and festivities, the way people decorate their houses at the uptown, walking through the narrow alleys and observing the city from the riverside are some of the things to do here. And then there's also lots to see around, in the Central Region of Portugal.
If you want to visit the University of Coimbra, it is also a must: it's Royal Chapel, the old Palace and - the cherry on top of the cake - Joanina Library... will leave you speachless! If you can, visit this city with a specialized guide as there are many things that will go unnoticed if you decide to explore on your own. Also, this is the best way to have an introduction to Portuguese History and understand the rest of the places you're going to visit in the country!
I guide tours there very often and I promise this is something you don't want to skip!
