TOUR TO TATEV, KHNDZORESK
About Group
Have you ever been in Old Khndzoresk? Have you seen the 160-meter-long rocking bridge in Khndzoresk, the cave dwellings where people lived until the 1950s? If not, then join us!
In addition to the cave dwellings in Khndzoresk, we will also see the tomb of Mkhitar Sparapet, as well as 2 churches of the 15th-17th centuries. Then we will visit the Tatev monastery, where you can sit on the record-ropeway. One of the miracles of nature, the Devil’s bridge, is located on the bottom of Tatev monastery, in the 500-meter gorge of the Vorotan river. We will also have a stop in front of the beautiful Shaki Waterfall. In the evening we will have a free wine tasting in Areni.

Travel Map
Yerevan is the ancient capital of Armenia which is very popular today among tourists from different countries. The sights of Yerevan and its surrounding provinces include many old fortresses, churches, museums and other cultural monuments of the country. The city with a long history nowadays has a convenient and developed infrastructure, beautifully combining elements of old and modern architecture.
Tatev Monastery (IX-X century) is located in Syunik province. The monastery has a rich history. Tatev was not only a spiritual, but also an educational center. One of the best universities, where the humanities were studied, functioned here during the Middle Ages. The monastery buildings stand almost on the edge of a steep cliff, from where visitors can admire a stunning picturesque scenery of the gorge. The path to the monastery was quite long and difficult years ago, by car it was necessary to get to the place along the mountainous road-serpentine. However, after the opening of Tatever ropeway (Wings of Tatev), the path to the attraction takes very short time. It also gives a lot of amazing unforgettable impressions. It should be mentioned that Wings of Tatev holds the record for the longest non-stop double track cable car.
Shaki waterfall is located on the Shaki River (a tributary of the Vorotan) in the north of Sisian city. The territory of the waterfall is very picturesque. You can see many small grottoes and caves here, and the waterfall itself has a truly fabulous sight. The noise and power of the waterfall, falling from a height of 18 meters, is so strong that it drowns out human voices and any other sounds.
Khndzoresk is a unique place of interest, famous for its ancient caves, where people lived until the 1950s. Khndzoresk was considered a historical monument, which was preserved by the Soviet Union. “Old Khndzoresk should be preserved and protected as the largest museum of antiquities,” said Martiros Saryan. “There are few such wonderful places in the world.” The history and nature of Khndzoresk are reflected in the works of a number of Armenian writers and artists. In the end of the 19th century Old Khndzoresk was the biggest village of Eastern Armenia. In the beginning of the 20th century the community had 8300 inhabitants (1800 households). In 1913 there were 27 shops, 3 dye-houses, tanneries, 7 schools. The village is famous for taking part in the liberation movement of David Bek. The fortress of Khndzoresk served as a military base for Mkhitar Sparapet in 1728-1730.
People who appreciate good wines and are interested in the history of ancient architecture, will definitely fall in love with the tiny Armenian Areni village. The “Areni Wine” festival has been arranged here every autumn since 2009; over 100 types of finest Armenian wines are presented at the festival and visitors can taste and purchase young and old wines manufactured at the Areni winery.
